About the Hub

The UK is home to one of the world's most dynamic offshore renewable energy sectors, having built a global leadership position in offshore wind. Maintaining that leading position requires faster innovation, stronger collaboration and better support for the technologies and businesses shaping the next generation of projects. We will need continuous innovation, collaboration and investment.

Funded by Innovate UK, the Wind Innovation Hub has been created to do exactly that, partnering the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, NCC and NMIS and combining more than 45 years of combined innovation and technology expertise—spanning offshore renewable energy, advanced composites, digital and sustainable manufacturing, and industrial scale-up.

The Hub exists to accelerate the development, testing and adoption of new technologies aligned to the five priority technology areas – identified in The Industrial Growth Plan – that strengthen the competitiveness, resilience and sustainability of the sector. By combining market intelligence, roadmapping and hands-on technical support, the Hub will connect the right challenge to the right expertise—and turn shared insight into coordinated action. The aim is simple: de-risk innovation, strengthen commercialisation pathways and help more breakthrough solutions move faster toward deployment in offshore wind.

That means focusing effort on the Plan’s five key technology areas:

• Advanced turbine technology
• Industrialised foundations and substructures
• Future electrical systems and cables
• Smart environmental services
• Next generation installation and O&M

The Opportunity

Why does The Wind Innovation Hub matter?

Offshore wind plays a critical role in delivering energy security, economic growth and net-zero ambitions.

Innovation is essential to reducing costs, improving performance and ensuring the UK remains a global leader in offshore renewable energy.

The Wind Innovation Hub exists to facilitate innovation, collaboration and accelerate technology adoption to create lasting impact across the sector.

FAQs

Frequently
Asked Questions

Find clear, straightforward answers to commonly asked questions.
What exactly is the Wind Innovation Hub and why do we need it?

The Wind Innovation Hub is a new, independent, mission-led partnership designed to accelerate innovation across the UK’s wind sector. It brings together industry, government and academia to define clear technology priorities, identify critical gaps, and move high‑potential innovations from advanced R&D into industrial deployment.

The UK is already a global leader in offshore wind, but maintaining that position requires faster innovation, stronger coordination and a clearer pathway from invention to commercial scale. The Wind Innovation Hub exists to provide that focus and ensure the UK remains at the forefront of the global market.

What is the Hub planning to achieve and how will its success be measured?

The Hub is focused on delivering five core outcomes:

• Clear, evidence-based technology priorities for the sector
• Mission-led roadmaps to address key industry challenges
• Stronger alignment across industry, government and academia
• Targeted support for high-potential companies and technologies
• Faster progression from innovation to deployment

Success will be measured through tangible progress — including the quality of roadmaps, level of industry engagement, number of companies supported, and the advancement of technologies towards commercial adoption.

What gaps exist in the industry regarding the technology needed to let the UK reach the Government’s clean energy targets by 2030, and how will the Wind Innovation Hub address those?

The UK has built a global leadership position in offshore wind, but staying ahead will take faster innovation, stronger collaboration and better support for the technologies and businesses shaping the next generation of projects. The Wind Innovation Hub has been created to do exactly that.

The pace and scale of offshore wind deployment have increased rapidly, and it can be a challenge in such a rapidly evolving landscape for innovation to keep pace. As a result, there are gaps in technology readiness, infrastructure, supply chain capability and investment alignment.

The Wind Innovation Hub will addresses this by bringing clarity and coordination, identifying the most critical challenges, developing focused missions to tackle them, and connecting the right organisations, expertise and investment to accelerate solutions.

What is the £2M ‘Accelerating Innovations’ Fund and how will it work? How can companies apply for support, and will it award funding or in-kind support?

The ‘Accelerating Innovations’ programme provides £2 million of targeted support for high‑potential companies aligned with the Hub’s priorities.

This is primarily delivered as in-kind support. Companies will gain access to technical expertise, testing facilities, manufacturing insight, and commercial and investment readiness support.
